If you have certain life changes, you can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. If you do, your coverage could start sooner.
- If you have a baby, adopt a child, or place a child for foster care: Your coverage can start the day of the event – even if you enroll in the plan up to 60 days afterward.
- If you get married, lose health coverage, move to a new state, or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period another way:
- Be sure you act quickly as some of these have limits on how long you have to apply
- Other life changes that can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.
Think you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period?
- Just start a Marketplace application or log in to an existing one. You’ll find out if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
- You may still select ON EXCHANGE or OFF EXCHANGE, based on your ability to qualify for the “subsidy”
- When you apply, you may also find out if you qualify for coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). If you do, coverage can start the day you apply or earlier.
